Internship Opportunities

Loxahatchee River District Internship Opportunities:

The LRD internship program is designed to integrate knowledge and theory learned in school with practical application and skills in a professional environment.  Our internships are a semester (fall, spring, summer), in duration and may or may not be for school credit.  These internships are paid, and they typically last three (3) months and may be part-time or full-time.  All internships must be less than 1000 hours total in a calendar year.

All interns must be a minimum of 18 years of age.  Interns must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking college or university with a focus related to the position in which you are applying for and have a valid Florida Driver’s License.  Interns are also required to complete the full duration of their assigned internship period to be eligible for college credit and any possible future employment opportunities at the District.

Engineering Intern

Semesters available:

  • Summer- May to August
  • Fall- September to December

Applicants are encouraged to apply for each semester at least 3 months prior to start of internship.

The Engineering Intern will focus on special projects including field work and data entry into the District’s Global Information System (GIS) Map and Asset Management software (EAM).  The work will include evaluation of District assets to determine functionality and condition, shadowing/ assisting District Construction Inspectors on job sites, review/ research of record information, plats, easements, as-builits, and surveys to update GIS and EAM.  The Engineering Intern will work Monday through Friday up to 30 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Following specific test procedures to determine functionality of assets.
  • Following specific inspection procedures to determine condition of assets.
  • Use of Global Information System (GIS) system for field navigation.
  • Use of CMMS system for data entry

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age’
  • currently enrolled in an ABET accredited Civil, Mechanical, Environmental or Industrial Engineering program.
  • GIS familiarity
  • Valid Florida driver’s license
  • Must pass drug test and background check along with physical.

Key Competencies:

  • Able to work self-directed given appropriate training and direction.
  • Motivated self-starter.
  • Familiarity with GIS & CAD
  • Able to independently collect, process and document findings.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written & verbal); able to maintain professionalism.
  • Computer skills. Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Ability to learn basic CMMS skills.
  • Ability to Learn GIS skills.

River Center Internship

Semesters available:

  • Summer- May to August
  • Fall/ Spring – September to May

Applicants should apply for each semester at least 3 months prior to start of internship.

Education interns will be responsible for leading education tours and activities at the center for visiting school, home school, and camp groups.  Group tours occur Tuesday- Friday, 10am- 12pm.  Daily responsibilities include, but not limited to greeting guests, caring for aquatic life, assisting in species collection, participating in outreach events, coordinating and recruiting volunteers, leading children’s programs, and assisting with special events.  Education interns are also encouraged to create, implement, and evaluate their own interest program or project during their time at the River Center with the assistance of our Education.  The River Center Intern will work varying days and hours during the internship.

Currently enrolled, degree-seeking, College student or recent college graduate with a focus on education, environmental sciences, marine sciences, biological sciences, water resources may apply.

WildPine Laboratory Internship

Semesters available:

  • Summer- May to August
  • Fall- September to December
  • Spring- January to May

Applicants should apply for each semester at least 3 months prior to start of internship.

Laboratory Interns will be responsible for assisting technician’s in the operation of the WildPine Ecological Laboratory.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, collecting water samples, free diving to monitor oysters and seagrass, assisting with water quality analysis, participating in outreach events, retrieving recycled oyster shells from area restaurants, prepare shells for use in research projects.  Laboratory interns are also encouraged to create, implement, and evaluate their own project during their time at the Laboratory with assistance of Laboratory staff.   The WildPine Laboratory Intern will work varying days and hours during the internship.

Currently enrolled, degree-seeking, College student or recent college graduate with a focus on environmental sciences, marine sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, water resources may apply.
